Ok, maybe the title is a little sensationalist. But this smoothie is amazing. I’m not the biggest smoothie person. Never have been. But I’m in love with this smoothie.
They say necessity is the mother of invention. This recipe can attest to that. I needed a way to get my nutrients in after having my wisdom teeth removed. My face and jaw were swollen and in pain. I just wanted to stick my whole head in a tub of ice. Eating was not a priority. The idea of chewing made me cringe. My only option was to drink, and to drink something cold.
I had to stay away from hot things for the first 24 hours, so all that bone broth simmering away on the stove would have to wait. Smoothies it was! I had lots of bananas in the fridge and quite the variety of frozen fruit in the freezer. The world was my oyster as it were.

My healing strategy for this surgery included a serapeptase supplement to help reduce swelling and speed healing, topical application of arnica gel for pain management, a vitamin C supplement to prevent infection and support tissue rebuilding, lots of ice (obviously!), and plenty of fermented beverages to help populate the new tissue with beneficial bacteria and support my digestion while healing. Copious amounts of bone broth and warm salt water mouth rinses were added to the roster after the first 24 hours.
Back to the smoothie. Have I mentioned that Scott is probably the best nurse ever? If I haven’t, allow me. He is the best nurse ever! He has and continues to take such very good care of me on this healing journey. I don’t know where I’d be without him!
This recipe is compliments of him! While I do love a creamy coconut milk-based smoothie, I just wasn’t feeling it this time, not to mention that I find coconut milk tends to thicken things up when cold. I needed to be very careful about not creating pressure or vacuums in my mouth, so trying to suck down a thick, cold smoothie wasn’t an option. The alternative? Water kefir!
Man oh man, was it good, and just the thing I needed that first day after my surgery! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did (and continue to)!!
