I’ve heard I’m not the easiest person to shop for.
I can’t eat most things in gift baskets, boxes of goodies, or cookie tins. We live in a two-bedroom apartment with minimal storage space. I’m pretty particular about what I put in and on my body, and the bodies of my family members, and equally as particular about what comes in my home. It’s little wonder that I end up with more than a few gift cards this time of year (and I greatly appreciate them all), but Scott is not going to get away with the gift card approach, and I’m guessing there are some people in your life who wouldn’t, or wouldn’t want to, either.
In an effort to keep gift giving in perspective this time of year, we follow the old guide: something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read. And then whatever extra little goodies happen to find their way into our stockings.
Since I’m sure I’m not the only one on a healing diet with health-conscious and sustainable priorities in my life, I thought I’d share my Christmas wish list here with you!
Something I Want
- Kleen Kanteen – In my ongoing effort to purge plastics from our house, Scott has given me one of these as a birthday gift some years ago. I loved it! I found it bigger than the other glass or stainless steel water bottles readily available in stores at the time and it held up really well to all kinds of abuse. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced it, complete with sports cap, on a recent weekend trip to Calgary and have not seen it since. This on in my want list because I do have other glass water bottles, but I don’t like any of them as well as this one! Although I’m considering upsizing to the 64-ounce version.
- Kitchen Timer – Since our unit does not have in-suite laundry (thankfully not as much of an issue now that we are out of diapers), Mondays can get tricky having to keep track of the timing on various washers and dryers, so a kitchen timer would really come in handy!
Something I Need
- KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker – since I already have my beloved InstantPot, this is next on my appliance must-have list. I’ve lost count of how many times Scott and I discussed our lack of ice cream at length this past summer. After a long day in the garden, it would have been so nice to come home to some ice cream. Even for those who consume dairy, conventional ice cream is often full of less-than-desirable ingredient. Plus, homemade just tastes so good!
- 1-cup Pyrex Measuring Cup – It might seem silly that this is in the “need” list, but I’ve been through a few too many Anchor Hocking measuring cups that lose their markers well before a year of use. My other Pyrex measuring cups I’ve had for years and they still look brand new! Now I just need a 1-cup one, since I already have the 2-cup and 4-cup ones, for measuring out those smaller amounts.
- Yoga Mat – I’m not much a of a yogi, but this mat would be perfect for our wall-to-wall laminate flooring when I’m down on the floor doing my bodywork, or even as my qi gong space. The floors are just so hard and that little bit of padding makes a lot of difference.
Something to Wear
- Wool base layer pieces – On the Canadian prairie in winter, you need to keep warm, and few materials are as effective at that as wool. Since CFS and fibromyalgia are common company to Hashimoto’s, and since I was showing some very glaring signs of fibro before starting AIP in 2014, it’s even more important for me to keep the chills at bay or I can suffer the effects for days. Wearing wool has been found to be very effective at relieving fibromyalgia symptoms. It just so happens that our local Costco has brought in a nice assortment of 100% merino wool long-sleeve t-shirts, made right here in Canada out of Australian wool. They also happen to carry some good merino wool blend socks in packs of 6! Now to find some bottoms to go with those shirts and socks…
- Gloves/mittens – This one isn’t necessarily crunchy, but my old leather dress gloves are showing their years of love and getting quite thin in some places. They were certainly lacking in warmth last winter, so time for a new pair! I’m a big fan of Hides in Hand for these kinds of things. 100% Canadian owned, operated, and manufactured from start to finish, the quality is outstanding. They use moose, buffalo, and deer hides sourced right here in Canada under strict conservation guidelines, and I have yet to be disappointed with any of their products. I’ve had my eye on their deerskin leather mitts with removable liner for a while now, and they come in such a vibrant assortment of colours!
- Mascara – I LOVE my Earth Lab Cosmetic Raw Mascara! It goes on nice and smooth, stays put, and, most importantly, does not irritate my eyes. It took me a long time to find a mascara that I really, truly liked and enjoyed wearing. It even smells good! It is very water soluble, though, so just be aware. My only concern is that it seems to be getting harder to come by and I hope that this great Canadian company is not going out of business! Their products really are fantastic!
Something to Read
- Prescription for Nutritional Healing – I remember my mom having this book when I was a kid (a much earlier addition, obviously) and how much she used it. It’s packed with great information about treating and preventing a wide range of ailments naturally with foods, supplements, and other natural remedies. This one has been on my list for a couple of years now, so I’m hoping Santa comes through this year.
- Cure Tooth Decay – I’ve been lucky enough to have never had a cavity, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be the case forever and I also have Scott and Little Miss to think about, too. Sharing much in common with the tenets of the Weston A. Price Foundation, this book gives you some great insight and information on how to heal and keep healthy yours and your family’s teeth, saving your health, your teeth, and your wallet.
- Paleo Principles – What paleo wish list wouldn’t be complete without this! I haven’t had a chance to get my hands on it yet, but I would sure like to!
- Unconventional Medicine – A must read (from what I hear) for those looking to the current epidemic of chronic and inflammatory diseases and conventional medicine’s symptom-based approach.
- Nourishing Traditions – This well-thought guide to traditional foods and diet from the Weston A. Price Foundation’s own Sally Fallon has been on my radar for a while. Who doesn’t enjoy a little bit of politically-incorrect nutrition advice!
